What Makes Rosie Tick?

What do you find most rewarding about being a school counselor?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a school counselor is the profound impact you can have on a child’s life. You might be the only person to give them a hug, greet them warmly, cheer them on and genuinely believe in them. Having someone who believes in them can be an important influence in a child’s life. It can provide the encouragement and support they need to thrive.

What brings you joy?
I enjoy using my hands to create things. From crafting and sewing to building a pergola, I love watching something come to life from nothing.

How do you help students thrive?
I help students thrive by being a constant source of support for them. Support can come in the form of a morning greeting, a hug, simply being there to listen, encouraging them to keep trying or reminding them that they can overcome challenges.

What’s the most adrenaline-inducing adventure you’ve ever experienced?
Swimming in an underground natural pool in Cancun, Mexico (Xcaret Natural Waterpark)

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A pediatric nurse

What’s one bucket-list item you want to accomplish in 2025?
Take a cruise to the Bahamas

If you were asked to cook a signature dish, what would it be?
Green chicken enchiladas

What’s a weird fact you know?
I can remember events from before I was 3 years old.

What’s your favorite dessert?
Red velvet cake

If you could have an unlimited supply of something for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’m a foodie. I love all kinds of food and am always up for trying something new.

How would you describe your job to a 5 year old?
A school counselor is a fancy word for someone who helps all kids. I am a helper who can listen to you when you are happy, sad or have big feelings. I can help make you feel safe, teach you ways to be a good friend and cheer you on to do your best. I can also help you make better choices when you make a mistake. I am a helper who loves you and will always be here for you.

Do you have any hidden talents? What can you do?
I am an expert at Pictionary.

What’s your favorite smell and why?
The smell after a rainy day. The rain reminds of a fresh start.

What’s one important skill you think everyone should have?
Empathy

What could you talk about for 30 minutes with no notes?
True crime documentaries

You have your own late-night talk show – who would you invite as your first guest?
Andy Cohen – I secretly love reality TV and would enjoy getting the scoop on all my favorite reality stars.

How did you get into school counseling? How did you know it was the right path for you?
After teaching fourth grade for nine years, I felt the need to support more than just the 22 students in my classroom. I noticed that many of their academic struggles stemmed from social/emotional challenges. Understanding that kids faced these challenges enabled me to support their social/emotional needs, which undoubtedly affected their academics and all other aspects of their lives. I knew I was on the right path when I saw the impact I was making.
