Using Noncognitive Skills to Improve Student Success

ASCA, the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals have joined together to create a professional development opportunity for teachers, administrators and school counselors to collaborate to improve student outcomes through the development of noncognitive skills. The foundation of the training is the ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success®. These standards describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development and will be the essential program content.

Learn how your district’s administrators, teachers and school counselors can collaborate to use these noncognitive skills to support each other’s shared mission – improve academic achievement, attendance and behavior for their students. The training creates an opportunity for professional dialogue and action. Through the use of adult learning skills, principals, teachers and school counselors will engage in an exploration and outcome-based experience concentrated on implementation and delivery of the content into existing instructional programs.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this hands-on workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize and be familiar with the ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success®
  • Explain how noncognitive skills have an impact on student success
  • Describe how administrators, teachers and school counselors can collaborate on noncognitive skills to improve student achievement, attendance and behavior
  • Identify focused areas of need within their student academic outcomes and identify solutions
  • Leverage the student skills needed for core college- and career-readiness standards providing the optimum environment for meeting academic benchmarks
  • Focus on student mindsets  and behaviors through learning strategies, self-management skills and social skills and integrate these standards into classroom instruction and embed them into schoolwide learning outcomes
  • Engage and extend learning to other staff to grow professionally and measure learning progress and the impact on their schools and student achievement

Schedule: Full-day training; 0.6 CEUs available to attendees

Cost: $3,750*

To bring this professional development workshop to your district, email Jennifer Walsh.

The workshop may be adjusted to some extent based on participants’ needs and progress. *In circumstances requiring extensive travel arrangements, additional fees may apply.
