ASCA Ethical Standards Revisions

At the summer conference, ASCA announced that it was undertaking a revision of the Ethical Standards for School Counselors. Revisions are done every six years. This year, every state is represented in the revision process.

MSCA thanks the following colleagues for their thoughtfulness and dedicated work on the sections of the standards that Missouri was assigned to review and revise. They are:
  • Dr. Shari Sevier, Lead; Becky Houtchens (Maryville R-II)
  • Jennifer Morrison (Farmington School District)
  • Dr. Andy Schuerman (Park Hill School District)
  • Jazell Thomas (Hazelwood School District)
  • Sam Walk (St. Clair School District)
We also thank the following individuals who served as consultants for our work:
  • Chrissy Bashore (DESE)
  • Nancy Doubrava (Nixa Public Schools)
  • Susan Perkins (Columbia Public Schools)

MSCA Elects New Board Members

During the opening session of the MSCA 2021 Fall Conference, MSCA announced incoming members of the Board of Directors. We are pleased to welcome these individuals to our Board of Directors; their three-year of office will begin on July 1, 2022.
  • Rebecca Chambers-Arway, Polo R-VII Schools*
  • Carey Hughes, Belton School District #124
  • Tosha Todd, Blue Springs School District*
* Rebecca and Tosha are currently serving their first term on the Board of Directors and were each elected to a second term.

To be eligible to serve on the MSCA Board of Directors, an individual must:
  • be employed full-time in school counseling
  • have been practicing school counselor for at least five years
  • hold a valid school counselor certificate
  • be a current MSCA member and have been a member for at least five years immediately preceding election
  • currently serve or have previously served on a region governing board or program committee
  • have the full support of their school administration
The MSCA Board of Directors represents more than 1,400 school counselor members from school districts across the state of Missouri.

November 6-8 in Osage Beach
Save the Date for the 2022 Fall Conference! The event will be held November 6-8 at the Tan-Tar-A Conference Center in Osage Beach.

The deadline for workshop proposal submission is May 1, 2022 – access submission information here and watch for additional details coming soon!
 

Matthew Berry: ASCA Top Five School Counselors in the Nation

Missouri school counselors are top-notch! We were thrilled to learn that Matthew Berry, our 2020 Missouri School Counselor of the Year, was selected as one of ASCA’s Top 5 School Counselors in the Nation. He is a rock star of our profession, and we are incredibly proud of him! Matt was unable to be with us for our fall conference because he was in Washington, DC, with the other finalists.

Alma Lopez, from Livingston, California, was selected as the National School Counselor of the Year. MSCA is proud to join all 50 states in honoring Alma! The School Counselor of the Year finalists are: Matthew Berry; Teshia Stovall Dula from Duluth, Georgia; Marianne Matt from Madison, Wisconsin; and Ashley Wright from Spring, Texas. All of these individuals will be honored at the School Counselor of the Year gala in Washington, DC, on February 3.
