Southwest Division Update

SWMSCA held their fall meeting on Wednesday, October 23, at MSU, Mankato. The Counseling and Student Personnel department at MSU offered three sessions for our counselors. Dr. Helena Stevens started our morning with a presentation on achievement motivation. Dr. Stevens and Dr. Tracy Peed also presented about the supervision of counseling interns, a session to help guide those new to intern supervision and a great refresher for our veteran school counselors. For our last session, Dr. Richard Auger led a panel discussion with current college students who discussed their experiences with mental health and disabilities while in the K–12 system and how school counselors can support students they work with.

During the afternoon business meeting, we were able to vote on and pass three new amendments for our SWMSCA Constitution. We also elected the next SWMSCA president-elect, Chelsea Bucholz. Chelsea works as the nonpublic counselor in New Ulm at both Cathedral High School and St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary. Chelsea has already provided valuable leadership to our division and we look forward to her leading us into the future.

We are currently in the works for planning our fall meeting, tentatively to be held at Southwest Minnesota State University in early spring of 2020. We look forward to seeing everyone in St. Paul at the annual conference in April!
