Great things are happening in KSCA! As KSCA president, I had the honor of representing our association a few times during the past couple of months. Recently, I presented on behalf of KSCA to the Lt. Governor’s Task Force on Prevention of Suicide and shared the importance of school counselors in the area of mental health and prevention of death by suicide. The task force is an important opportunity for every school counselor to demonstrate leadership and advocacy for our credentials and role in schools!
It was an honor to hear Dr. Leslie T. Fenwick (pictured) speak on the topic of leadership in education during a Distinguished Educational Research Lecture Series. Dr. Fenwick is dean emeritus of the Howard University School of Education and a tenured professor of educational policy and leadership. A former visiting scholar and visiting fellow at Harvard University, she is currently a senior fellow for the McDonald Character Leadership Program at West Point Academy.
In addition to hearing her lecture, I also was incredibly fortunate to be invited to attend a meet and greet with Dr. Fenwick. I shared with her the issues school counselors in small rural schools have expressed regarding access to military recruiters and military academy personnel. She was extraordinarily gracious in offering contact information to resolve those concerns and issues.
During the lecture, Dr. Fenwick included school counselors in acknowledging the importance of qualified licensed professionals serving in the roles in which they are hired. She recommended that educators, including school counselors, confront the injustice of unqualified professionals. Dr. Fenwick challenged educators to advocate and lead with informed data and a strengths-based approach. Her words were powerful for school counselors, encouraging our profession to promote equal access to school programs and courses for all students; advocate for equal treatment in leadership opportunities, student governance and discipline issues; address less-than-equal outcomes for any group of students; and share accurate affirming data with students, parents, and the community.
