2020 NSCA School Counselor Academy to Focus on Marginalized Students
By Doug Hauserman | April 2020
School counselors often seen themselves as fighting for our students who, for one reason or another, have fewer advantages than their peers and greater obstacles to overcome. Sometimes when we think of marginalized populations, we think of students who are of a particular race, but we also know it is much more than that. Marginalized students also include those with incarcerated parents, immigrants, those who will be first-generation college students, LGBTQ students, students in single-parent homes and students in families with limited financial resources, to name just a few. The 2020 NSCA School Counselor Academy, “Excellence Through Equity,” will help strengthen your ability to advocate for and help students who need it most, while also providing professional development to help you improve your overall comprehensive school counseling program.
NSCA is thrilled to announce that Brian Coleman will kick off the 2020 Academy as the opening session keynote speaker. Coleman is the 2019 National School Counselor of the Year and a school counselor and counseling department chair at Jones College Prep High School in downtown Chicago. Jones College Prep High School is part of Chicago Public Schools. Coleman is an actor who found his passion in education and school counseling. As an actor, Coleman thrives on the stage and will entertain you, inspire you and make you laugh. As the 2019 ASCA School Counselor of the Year, he has a wealth of knowledge to share about being authentic with your students and advocating for those students who need it most. Coleman brings everything you would want in a keynote speaker.
The 2020 NSCA School Counselor Academy will take place November 12–13 at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln. This new location for the academy provides more space for breakout sessions and exhibitors and large sleeping rooms that include a made-to-order breakfast and complimentary evening reception. Hotel reservations at the NSCA group rate of $139 per night may be made using this exclusive hotel link.
Finally, we know that school counselors all across the state are doing amazing and innovative work in their schools. Please consider sharing your successes with colleagues at the academy by presenting a breakout session.
