President’s Letter: Leading from the Heart

By Laquietta Stewart | February 2020

I firmly believe that school counselors are the heart of the school. We have the power to influence change, and it is our responsibility to come into our school each day with a positive attitude that is contagious. I understand that everyone does not have the confidence to consider themselves a leader, but school counseling is a leadership position in the school and it is our responsibility to advocate for our students by implementing programs that will benefit them.

As school counselors, we should strive to be leaders by involving as many stakeholders within the school and community as possible while marketing our program and proudly celebrating our successes for all to see. We must be open to learning and willing to work with others, and must use our skills to empower our students and coworkers. What better way to help our students than to positively influence the school culture of our building? This task is not a simple one, but if you walk in the door each day believing you can make a difference, then you can make this happen. It’s important that we determine the outcomes we want from our school counseling program, collect data and influence fellow educators to establish a shared purpose to promote systemic change.

With that being said, I truly believe the attitude and behaviors of the school counselor are the origin for school climate change. It’s important that we come in each day with an inviting smile and cheerful greeting to everyone that we pass in the halls. A smile is contagious, even to grumpy people – they can’t help it! Be the one to lift them up for that little moment. You might actually make their day. Everyone you speak with should feel the passion for what you do resonate from your conversations. Even if you feel like you aren’t a leader, you can always lead by example. If you are passionate about the programs you implement, and your students and faculty members sense your kindness and integrity to create positive change, you will have followers.

Go forth and lead, Arkansas school counselors!
