President’s Letter: Polish to Find Students’ Shine

By Terri Callaway | January 2019

As we think about our work as counselors, we often find ourselves in the position of being the one who sees the hidden shine in our students. As we work in advocating for all students, we may be the only person who will take the time to see the hidden jewel among the student’s misbehaviors or what seems to be a lack of interest in learning. The articles in this newsletter share information about career readiness in our students. The jobs that our students will have the opportunity to choose from during their careers may not have even been created or needed yet. With this in mind, we must work to provide our students with the skills to be ready for the challenges that might arise in new job markets. We must make sure that our students learn the skills of communication, teamwork, problem solving, good work ethic and being a lifelong learner, so that they will be ready to meet the challenges of jobs that we may not have even thought of.

As we prepare our students for possible future work opportunities, we must not forget to work on polishing our potential to be the one to inspire those we work with each day. One great way to shine in our profession is to attend and present during our state conference. ArSCA’s upcoming conference is a wonderful opportunity to network with peers, acquire new knowledge and sharpen the skills we use every day with our students. This year’s conference will be held in Hot Springs from July 8-10, 2019. Conference provides a great opportunity for the counselors of our state to share ideas and learn from each other. Keynote speakers and presenters will provide in-service opportunities in areas of interest for elementary, middle and high school levels.

Remember, we as counselors may be the only adult who provides that positive influence that builds the confidence in our students to reach their goals. Charles Schultz said, “Life is like a ten-speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use.” As we work with our students each day, I challenge us to help our students to see the hidden talents that they possess and help them to use these talents to shine in their chosen paths in life.
