KSCA Bylaws Update
Every few years, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) reviews the Kansas School Counselor Association’s bylaws. In preparation, our KSCA board is putting together a special committee to conduct an internal review and prepare revisions to our bylaws. One of the most exciting ideas discussed at our annual spring meeting was an amendment to allow online member voting. Bylaw revisions will be shared with KSCA members through our website by April 29 and voted on at a special membership meeting at the School Counseling Camp in Manhattan, Kan.

American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association Announce New Collaborative Relationship
“As of April 1, both organizations will operate independently and autonomously – a formal recognition of the existing relationship, which was voted on by the ACA Governing Council on March 21, 2018. ACA and ASCA will continue to work together on common advocacy issues that strengthen the work of school counselors to support children and adolescents.”
-- ACA Website

“ASCA has been a division of ACA for 65 years, but both organizations have agreed it’s time for a change. On March 21, 2018, the ACA Governing Council voted unanimously to approve an agreement that would change ACA’s relationship with ASCA so ASCA would no longer be a division. The agreement takes effect April 1, 2018.”
-- Richard Wong, ASCA Executive Director

KSCA Awards
Our professional awards honor individuals whose passion, talent and expertise make the greatest contributions to the school counseling profession in Kansas. You can honor the best of the best when you nominate a school counselor, counselor educator, or principal advocate for one of these prestigious awards. Please visit www.ksschoolcounselor.org for more information or to submit a nomination. Nominations for KSCA Hall of Fame and the Promise Award (Outstanding New School Counselor) must be submitted no later than April 24. Nominations for Principal Advocate and Outstanding School Counselor of the Year are due this Fall. If you are a former recipient of these awards, we would love to have you serve on a future selection committee. Other members are welcome to assist with this process as well.

ASCA National Conference Planning
This year, nearly 20 KSCA members will attend the ASCA national conference in Los Angeles. We are excited that at least 10 of our Kansas attendees will participate in ASCA’s Leadership Development Institute and observe Delegate Assembly, an opportunity for elected officials from each state to provide direct input to ASCA. It isn’t too late to register for the conference, and if you have an interest in participating in LDI as a KSCA member, please email us today at ksschoolcounselor@gmail.com

KSCA President-Elect Dr. Judy Hughey invites you to attend the ASCA conference with her this summer in Los Angeles.

Kansas Legislative Update
Continue to view legislative updates on our website and Facebook page. Our continued advocacy means that school counselors are being mentioned more frequently in relation to school improvement! Credit goes to many Kansas Legislators – Education Commissioner Randy Watson, Deputy Commissioner Brad Neuenswander, KSDE Program Consultants Kent Reed and Myron Melton, and so many others! Please reach out to thank them and the stakeholders who consistently advocate for the hiring and retention of school counselors in every school at appropriate ratios.
