Workshop Description Meaningful mentoring relationships require time, commitment but most of all compassion for an individual child. This interactive workshop helps school counselors and other educators design a solid mentoring program in their schools. Attendees learn the importance of a goal-driven, relationship-oriented program that concentrating on healthy asset building for the mentor and the mentee. The workshop also covers mentor recruitment and training as well as program design and set up. Participants analyze the role of the school counselor and educators as they construct a mentoring program designed to add to a safe social climate for all youth.
Learning Objectives
· Consider specific goals and objectives when designing a mentoring program in your school. · Define and elaborate on the meaning of a mentor in a child’s life. · Identify risk factors for youth, and connect the importance of an asset-rich mentoring program to these factors. · Engage in interactive elements of a mentor training program, such as story-telling and role-playing to aid in creation of a mentor training set up in your school.
Presenter Mary A. Baird has been involved with The Ophelia Project since its inception, serving as its first executive director. A skilled and engaging speaker and trainer, Baird has co-coordinated an inner-city mentoring program for the past six years and serves as an adult mentor in two other inner-city programs run by The Ophelia Project.
